“Show me the man, I’ll show you the crime.” — Lavrentiy Beria, longest-serving secret police chief under Joseph Stalin.

“…the average American commits three felonies a day without even knowing it.” — Brett Tolman, Former U.S. Attorney, Executive Director Right on Crime.

You’re a felon. I’m a felon. We’re all felons here.

I had a vague idea of how Byzantine the U.S. “legal system” has become. I use quotes, because many of our laws didn’t come from our judicial branch, but from departments formed under the executive branch. This book explores why and how it happens, and some of the human toll of the cost. Only a tiny, tiny fraction of the cost …

Followers of U.S. politics will recognize Neil Gorsuch as one of the conservative members of the Supreme Court. This book is thankfully very light on cultural issues, and instead highlights a problem that the right and the left both should want to solve.

For a book about law, it is very readable (and in fact, is hostile to how impenetrable law has become. Did you know that at one point, if a law in the U.S. was deemed too hard to understand, you would not be charged. Yeah. Sigh.)

If there is any weakness to the book, it would be that it isn’t just humans and money at stake. I know about the problem of “Over Ruling” due to a project my dad was working on back in the 80s and 90s. It got stuck between a pissing match between the Environmental Protection Agency [EPA] and the Occupational Health and Safety Agency [Osha]. The delay endangered the Desert Tortoise, a threatened species, and thousands of miles of wild life habitat.

Anyway, highly recommend this book. Here’s the blurb …

Bookish introvert Morgen Keller never thought she would have a midlife crisis. That was before her husband divorced her, her boss let her go, and her grandmother died.

Forty wasn’t supposed to look like this.

When Morgen inherits Grandma’s old farmhouse in the small town of Bellrock, Washington, it could be a chance for a fresh start.

There are just a few problems…

A fearsome werewolf has claimed the property for himself, Grandma didn’t die of natural causes, and, oh, she was a witch.

Embroiled in a mystery, and heir to powers she knew nothing about, Morgen must turn to the only person who might be able to help: the werewolf who threatened to rip her throat out for trespassing.

This isn’t the fresh start on life that Morgen had in mind.

Magical matchmaking, family secrets, and wicked witches collide in this spellbinding cozy romantasy from mother-daughter writing duo ReGina Welling and Erin Lynn.

Some fates are harder to avoid than others.

When your family legacy comes with a body count and a curse that turned Grandma into a lawn ornament, believing you’re normal isn’t really an option.

Lexi’s badass witch ancestors were long revered as Keepers of the Balefire Flame—until a family feud pitted her mother and grandmother against one another. Their infamous magical battle didn’t just destroy each other; it turned the Balefire name into a punchline, leaving Lexi to tend the hearth alone.

The problem? Lexi’s never unlocked more than a whisper of power, one she credits for crafting unbreakable happily-ever-afters for her matchmaking clients, but it’s useless for much else. When it comes to the Balefire, her three well-meaning but troublesome faerie godmothers do all the heavy lifting.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NOW AN EXCITING SERIES FROM NETFLIX • The shell that blew a hole in his chest was only the beginning in this “tour de force of genre-bending, a brilliantly realized exercise in science fiction.”—The New York Times Book Review

In the twenty-fifth century, humankind has spread throughout the galaxy, monitored by the watchful eye of the U.N. While divisions in race, religion, and class still exist, advances in technology have redefined life itself. Now, assuming one can afford the expensive procedure, a person’s consciousness can be stored in a cortical stack at the base of the brain and easily downloaded into a new body (or “sleeve”) making death nothing more than a minor blip on a screen.

Ex-U.N. envoy Takeshi Kovacs has been killed before, but his last death was particularly painful. Dispatched one hundred eighty light-years from home, re-sleeved into a body in Bay City (formerly San Francisco, now with a rusted, dilapidated Golden Gate Bridge), Kovacs is thrown into the dark heart of a shady, far-reaching conspiracy that is vicious even by the standards of a society that treats “existence” as something that can be bought and sold.
