Delinquent or Prophet? Whichever teenager Josh Driscoll is, he may be his people’s only hope of salvation.

The Station is a city buried deep beneath the surface of a frozen, lifeless earth, its origins lost in the mists of time. Josh’s frequent rule-breaking exploits are focused on a single question – how did we get here?

But Josh goes too far when he steals a space-suit and escapes to the surface to explore.

As punishment, the governing Council, of which his father is a member, concscripts him to Saint Carmine’s, the Station’s resident monastery. At first desperate to escape, Josh finds himself drawn into the monastery’s ancient texts.

Deciphering a centuries-old scripture, Josh learns that the Black Heart, a computer complex sealed off after an ancient asteroid strike, may hold the answers he’s been seeking, and may be all that can save the Station from annihilation. When the deranged head of the Council vows to demolish the complex, Josh leads a desperate battle to stop him.

But can Josh and his tiny band of followers prevail in time to save them all?

This was the most fun in sci-fantasy fiction I read in all of 2022. If you loved the original Star Wars, but could have had a little more romance (although it is not technically a romance*), I think you’ll like this book. It’s definitely Space Fantasy. There is “magic” and there are also “soul bonds.” It is satisfyingly complicated, and the character development well done. If you’re looking for a fun read this holiday, I highly recommend it.

*Also, this is not blue alien erotica.

Here is the setup:

Bio-chemistry whiz Everly Jax wants one thing: to know who her parents are. Raised with other repo kids in InKubator 9, she has pinned her hopes on Reunion Day, the annual event where sixteen-year-olds can meet or reunite with their parents. When her Reunion Day goes horribly awry, she and her pregnant friend Halla escape the Kube, accompanied by their friend Wyck who has his own reasons for leaving.

In a world where rebuilding the population is critical to national survival, the Pragmatist government licenses all human reproduction, and decides who can–and must–have babies. The trio face feral dog packs, swamp threats, locust swarms, bounty hunters looking for “breeders,” and more dangers as they race to Amerada’s capital to find Halla’s soldier boyfriend before the Prags can repo her baby and force the girls into surrogacy service.

An unexpected encounter with Bulrush, an Underground Railroad for women fleeing to Outposts with their unlicensed babies, puts them in greater peril than ever. Everly must decide what she is willing to sacrifice to learn her biological identity–and deal with the unanticipated consequences of her decisions.
